I love a New Year! It always feels wonderful with fresh starts and chances to move forward from the past. I love creating bucket lists and vision boards at the beginning of each year. I’m not a slave to them because sometimes different opportunities come up that take time away from the bucket list, but still create awesome experiences! And any new experience is amazing to me, whether it’s on my list or not!
I know not everyone sees the New Year like I do, and that’s ok. But I do think this is a great time to begin making a few changes in life. One of my other favorite things to do is to begin de-cluttering my house. Getting rid of things that I don’t need. I am not a hoarder by any means. But I do have WAY too much stuff that I don’t use. I have more than two closets and three dressers filled with clothes. I have containers filled with things that I don’t know the last time I used. I have little things here and there which I am sure attach to something but I have no idea what and I am sure I probably gave away years ago! So I have committed to giving away at least two things a day. Or I might challenge myself to theminimalist.org challenge and give away the same amount of things as the date says on the calendar. Can you imagine the clutter you’d be rid of by January 31st?!?! I will let you know if I do that and how it goes. That would be quite a challenge to me as I tend to be a little too attached to my clothes! Which is ridiculous because many of them I haven’t worn in years! I guess I just hold onto the “What if it becomes stylish again?!” But, I’m challenging myself to let go and be less attached to material items. As Michael
Franti says “The best things in life aren’t things” in his song “I’ll be Waiting”.
The other commitment I have made is to journal again every day. I’m not too worried about when I journal, as I have been in the past, but just making myself journal. Making myself put on paper what I have experienced that day and what emotions I am going through. Actually seeing what has caused certain emotions. I make it no secret what I am going through in my personal life. There is a lot of depression and anxiety that is around me right now. I must do whatever it takes to release my emotions onto paper. I do believe there is transference of energy when you write and put things onto paper. I used to do this a lot and then I stopped. I am sure I stopped because I told myself I didn’t have the time. But this is a habit I MUST get back into. Especially at this time in my life. I think this is another very therapeutic thing for everyone. Journaling can be different for each of us. Where I write, you may draw. Find whatever works for you and just block out a time each day to get it done!
I am already committed to my workout routine although since my mom and sister are staying with me right now, I have given myself a break from the rigidity. I have a lot that I have to complete having them both here so that’s what I have considered my exercise. I’d prefer my group classes, but sometimes, this is the way things go. Learning to go with the flow is a good thing for this perfectionist! If you are looking to get back on track with your workouts or get into a new routine, Pilates Plus is a great place to start! Classes are small, we have many options and variety, and it’s like a family here! You won’t just be another number!
Things to think about for your New Year…What is on your bucket list? What is stopping you? Where do you need to de-clutter your life and take control? What MUST you do to make yourself feel better? Make it a MUST instead of a should. You’ll feel the difference immediately. And finally, declare publicly what your goals are for the year. Find accountability partners. If your goal is to lose weight, let others know so that they can support you in your journey. If your goal is to de-clutter your house join an accountability group. The more we announce things, the more accountable we will be to ourselves and the more likely we are to succeed in our goals.
